How closely allied are the distant poles
That have axis in common? All the near
Have been seen too many times to be dear,
And opposites join to make up the wholes.
Those who are far are divided by fear
Of the strange — conditions leaves and tree-boles
Do not share, as do the separate poles —
Conditions that lay ground for drawing near
Through curiosity, and also doles
Of satisfaction at finding what’s here
Is also there: satisfaction a peer
Does not feel. Then, again, it is a goal
To be reached, friendship with another soul
To replace what was just a nameless fear.
